SUMMARY:Beat the Microbead Day
DESCRIPTION:Clean Coasts will be holding our annual Beat the Microbead Day on June 6th. Microbeads are tiny particles of plastic are ingredients in thousands of personal care products sold around the world. These microbeads\, hardly visible to the naked eye\, flow straight from the bathroom drain into the sewage system. Wastewater treatment plants are not designed to filter out microbeads and so they end up in our oceans. \nSea creatures absorb or eat microbeads. These microbeads are passed along the marine food chain. Since humans are ultimately at the top of this food chain\, it is likely that we are also absorbing microbeads from the food we eat. Microbeads are not biodegradable and once they enter the marine environment\, they are impossible to remove.

SUMMARY:International Day for Biological Diversity
DESCRIPTION:2017 Theme: “Biodiversity and Sustainable Tourism”\nDiversity in species\, ecosystems and landscapes attracts tourism and promotes economic growth.  In turn\, a well-managed tourist sector can contribute significantly to reducing threats to\, and maintain or increase\, key wildlife populations and biodiversity values through tourism revenue.\nThe celebration of the International Day for Biological Diversity under this theme provides an opportunity to raise awareness and action towards the important contribution of sustainable tourism both to economic growth and to the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity.\nThis theme has been chosen to coincide with the observance of 2017 as the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development and provides an opportunity to contribute to ongoing initiatives such as the Sustainable Tourism Programme.

SUMMARY:World Octopus Day
DESCRIPTION:Octopuses have hundreds of suckers\, each one equipped with its own ganglion with thousands of neurons. These ‘mini-brains’ are interconnected\, making for a widely distributed nervous system. That is why a severed octopus arm may crawl on its own and even pick up food.\n– Frans de Waal \nWorld Octopus Day is actually the kick-off date for International Cephalopod Days and is an excellent time to celebrate these fantastic sea-going brain-foots. SUMMARY:Shark Awareness Day
DESCRIPTION:Contrary to expectations\, the purpose of Shark Awareness Day is not to stand on the beach and shout out warnings to terrified swimmers and surfers\, despite the hours of innocent fun that can provide. \nIt’s true that sharks are impressive hunters and predators\, yet the sad fact remains that these magnificent creatures are more threatened by people than we are by sharks. The worldwide demand for shark-fin soup\, shark-tooth medallions\, and a false sense of security on beaches everywhere\, all combine to leave sharks persecuted and endangered\, with millions of them being killed each year. \nLike top predators in any ecosystem\, sharks play an essential role in keeping the seas healthy and productive. Whilst no-one is suggesting we go out and hug a Great White on Shark Awareness Day\, it’s the least we can do to respect these wonderful creatures and let them be.

SUMMARY:World Oceans Day at Galway Atlantaquaria
DESCRIPTION:Clean Coasts officer for Galway\, Beckey-Finn\, will be taking part in the World Oceans Day celebrations at the Galway Atlantaquaria on Sunday 12th June from 11am to 5pm. \nThe World Oceans Day theme for 2015 – 2016 is  Healthy oceans\, healthy planet.\nThe ocean is the heart of our planet. Like your heart pumping blood to every part of your body\, the ocean connects people across the Earth\, no matter where we live. The ocean regulates the climate\, feeds millions of people every year\, produces most of the oxygen we breathe\, is the home to an incredible array of wildlife\, provides us with important medicines\, and so  much more! In order to ensure the health and safety of our communities and future generations\, it’s imperative that we take the responsibility to care for the ocean as it cares for us.\nEveryone’s health depends on a clean\, productive ocean. Under the theme of Healthy oceans\, healthy planet\, we encourage our partners and friends to focus on what actions each of us can take to protect the ocean and safeguard vulnerable communities and places. Please focus on whatever issues you think are most important in your community for a healthy ocean future.
