SUMMARY:Nominations for Ocean Hero Awards Now Open
DESCRIPTION: \n\n\nWe are asking the public to nominate volunteers who they believe have made an outstanding contribution to Ireland’s coastal environment. This year we are looking for entries to the following 6 categories: Group of the Year\, Individual of the Year\, School of the Year\, Business of the Year\, Idea of the Year and Beach Clean of the Year. \nWhat are the Ocean Hero Awards?\nThe Clean Coasts’ Ocean Hero Awards are about honouring the invaluable contribution Ireland’s coastal communities have made towards conserving our spectacular coastline. The awards\, originally called the ‘Clean Coasts’ Merit Awards’\, were conceived in 2006\, consisting then of only one category\, ‘The Clean Coasts’ Group of the Year’. Since then the Clean Coasts’ programme has grown to engage over 550 Clean Coasts groups\, becoming embedded in many coastal communities nationwide. In an effort to recognise this growth the number of Ocean Hero categories have expanded to include six categories. \nOcean Hero Award Nominations\nIf you would like to recognise an individual\, Clean Coasts group\, school\, business or beach clean that made a difference to our coast please fill in the SurveyMonkey form here: surveymonkey.com/r/Ocean-Heroes-2017. \nFor the ‘Idea of Year Award’ we are looking for volunteers who have raised the profile of coastal protection in their community through awareness raising events and interesting initiatives. \nThe nomination process only takes a few minutes and we would love to hear your voice. Nominations must be received by Friday October 20th for inclusion in the selection process. \nNominations are invited in the following categories: \n\nGroup of the Year\nIndividual of the Year\nSchool of the Year\nBusiness of the Year\nIdea of the Year\nBeach Clean of the Year

SUMMARY:Marram Grass Planting – Sligo
DESCRIPTION:Together with our group\, Lissadell Clean Coasts\, we will be running a practical marram grass planting workshop at Lissadell beach in Sligo on Friday 9th June. It will give those attending a full understanding of how the process is done and also tackle dune erosion at the beach. Please bring a shovel\, bucket and packed lunch as well as suitable clothing for the weather.  \nFor more information\, contact Olivia at ojones@eeu.antaisce.org. \nSand dunes act as natural buffers to the forces of the ocean and worth protecting. They are our one of our natural coastal defence mechanisms and protect the land behind the dune area whether agricultural or housing areas. They are also an important habitat for coastal flora and fauna. As part of Clean Coasts Week we will have a stand alone day bringing attention to the importance of sand dune protection\, this will be evident on our social media along with several marram grass planting events happening around the country.
