Wicklow Marine Litter Conference for Secondary Schools
November 7, 2017
Camilla speaking at a conference about how students can be part of the solution to tackling marine litter through responsible consumption, community engagement and social media campaigns such as ‘2 minute Beach Clean’.
This is a Marine Litter seminar for secondary schools in Arklow which will be held on the 7th of November in the Arklow Bay Hotel in Arklow. We have 140 students booked in from four secondary schools most of whom will be transition year schools. The schools involved are St. Mary’s College, Arklow CBS, Youthreach and Gaelcholaiste na Mara. All will do a beach clean in October before the seminar, two schools on Enereilly beach, one on Arklow South beach and one on Clogga beach. Through the three speakers I hope we will be able to show students the impact of litter and dumping on the marine environment, the work being done through PURE to tackle the problem across the county including the use of CCTV to catch perpetrators and with Clean Coasts how students themselves can engage actively in solving the problem with activities such as a two minute beach clean, the micro bead campaign and the Think before you flush campaign.
